چکیده

Introduction: Buchanan et al. [1] and Zolensky et al. [2] described carbonaceous chondrite fragments in a variety of howardites and concluded that the majority are CM2 and CR2 materials. Gounelle et al. [3] also described similar, but very small, fragments in these meteorites. These clasts are important because they represent materials that were in orbital proximity to the HED parent body (4 Vesta) and they may be similar to the primitive materials that originally accreted to form this body [2]. The present study describes two carbonaceous chondrite clasts in the Yamato 791834 (Y791834) polymict eucrite. Opaque minerals include oxides and sulfides. Pentlandite contains significant, but small, proportions of Co and Pb (Table 1). Pyrrhotite contains Ni and significant amounts of Co and Pb (Table 1). Magnetite occurs as relatively large, rounded to polygonal grains, which are reminiscent of plaquettes in CI and CR meteorites. This magnetite is almost pure Fe3O4 with minimal proportions of other components. Carbonates were not found.

Vesta’s mineralogical composition as revealed by the visible and infrared spectrometer on Dawn

The Dawn spacecraft mission has provided extensive new and detailed data on Vesta that confirm and strengthen the Vesta–howardite–eucrite–diogenite (HED) meteorite link and the concept that Vesta is differentiated, as derived from earlier telescopic observations. Here, we present results derived by newly calibrated spectra of Vesta. The comparison between data from the Dawn imaging spectrometer...

Delivery of dark material to Vesta via carbonaceous chondritic impacts

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft observations of Asteroid (4) Vesta reveal a surface with the highest albedo and color variation of any asteroid we have observed so far. Terrains rich in low albedo dark material (DM) have been identified using Dawn Framing Camera (FC) 0.75 lm filter images in several geologic settings: associated with impact craters (in the ejecta blanket material and/or on the crater wa...

Geochemical Study of Some Howardites and Polymict Eucrites

Introduction: Howardites and polymict eucrites are polymict breccias composed of eucrites, diogenites and other lithologies [1, 2, 3]. Previous studies showed that howardites contain chondritic clasts [e.g., 4, 5]. Howardites and polymict eucrties may contain metals which are related to impactors [6, 7, 8]. On the basis of chemical composition and mineralogical data, we will discuss the provena...

Feldspathic Clasts in Polymict Ureilites

Introduction: Ureilites are ultramafic meteorites composed mainly of magnesian (mg#=76-95) olivine and pyroxene, with minor carbon-bearing phases and metal. Ureilite characteristics suggest that monomict ureilites are residues of partial melting on a carbonaceous chondrite-like asteroidal parent body [1]. Basaltic meteorites complementary to the monomict ureilites are currently unknown, but wou...
